Apparently well publicized, I had the pleasure of staying at the Andels' Hotel Łódź while in Poland last week for a new project. Housed behind the historic red-brick façade of a former textile mill, the modern aesthetic of the interior creates a striking contrast. The entire grounds has been redeveloped into Manufactura, one of Poland's largest shopping, cultural and entertainment centers and a short distance to one of Europe's longest pedestrian walking streets, the famous Piotrkowska Street. The project was designed by British interior architects, Jestico + Whiles.

If I'm being honest, I still haven't the time to post but am doing so out of shear guilt. You see, adding content to Finndustry has always been a priority, providing a steady source of inspiration for myself and those who choose to read and peruse the site. I am extremely grateful to everyone who has shown interest over the years, resulting in a steady increase of site traffic and unique visitors. Finndustry has even reached the No. 2 search spot on Google for our Grand Canyon R2R Run post (R2R) with over 38,000 hits since the Spring of 2010.

Since leaving my position in July as a Senior Designer with CommArts, a Boulder based design agency, I've diligently pursued a freelance career, working almost exclusively with a Hamburg based retail developer. As such, I've taken up part time residency in Germany, adding a new twist to my day to day lifestyle....not to mention the eradication of most of my free time. In any event, Finndustry has been taken to a new level, becoming the official company name. As I am closing in fast upon the epic post No. 800, I've decided to celebrate (in no particular order) completed (and in progress) images of projects I'm either working on or have recently completed. While in Hamburg last week, I had the chance to check out the Robert Lebeck exhibit at Lumas. Unaware of Lebeck's career, I was overwhelmed with the beauty of the exhibit where carefully positioned slides were photographed while illuminated from the table below. The oversized images were then back mounted to large glass panel emphasizing the luminosity. With a photojournalistic career spanning over 6 decades, Lebeck captured on film some of the most important people and places of his time.

I can't say enough things about my most favorite of bag companies. Of course I've yet to purchase one but have my eye a few different styles. Always experimenting with new materials, in this case canvas, a limited edition of 200 summer bags have been produced.

Constructed with a single piece of "Cabeza de Toro" (Literally Bull's Head)* canvas, it is a versatile yet understated bag.
Folds on both sides give the bag structure and shape, allowing it to stand by itself even when empty.

Upon my first glimpse of photographer, filmmaker, and multimedia artist Douglas Gayeton's uniquely original work, commonly referred to as "flat films," I knew I had again stumbled upon the type of visual artist that stands out prominently among the pack. This is primarily due to his lovely ability to blend his interest in narrative, film and interactivity, composing a rich, cohesive and unmistakedely told story.

"I've always seen photography as being about a single moment, whereas film is about orchestrating a sequence of moments (scenes) to create a larger narrative, say's Gayeton.

"As a filmmaker who also shoots photographs, I try to document an event while it happens, not as one moment, but more from a cumulative standpoint. The concept of stories evolving over time is very important to me. In fact, many of my images are comprised of multiple photographs taken over the course of hours or even days. Others photographs capture a single moment from different vantage points. In this way I both compress and explode time.

"After shooting, I go into my "editing room" and build my story, which often takes the form of writing. This began, incidentally, as a personal record, a way for me to remember phrases overheard while I was shooting or specific cultural data, but lately the stories people tell me have become a major part of the work."

Seed Bombs

While a variety of "seed bombing" techniques have been deployed as a means of introducing vegetation to land plots, utilizing "seed grenades," a movement introduced by Liz Christy in the early 70's was a Green Guerilla standard, beautifying vacant, depressed lots in New York City. Similarly but for different purposes, the earliest records of aerial reforestation via seed bombing date back from 1930, when planes were used to distribute seeds over certain inaccessible mountains in Honolulu after forest fires.

The good news is that this initiative is gaining momentum especially given the influx of urban gardens and farmers markets perpetuating "grow local." Bubble gum and kitch toy machines are even being refit to sell individual pods. I for one love this idea and will "bomb" at will as soon as stash order shows from Visualingual.

Growing Gardens: Boulder

Jason Bruges Studio’s latest artwork has been unveiled at Sunderland Station. The 144m long piece presents a virtual platform filled with travellers within a glass block wall. The 3m tall glass block wall in the underground train station has been turned into a large low-resolution video matrix (755×15 pixels). Behind the wall is a disused platform, which long ago used to see passengers waiting for trains. Now the tracks are long gone and the old platform is hidden from view., we have created ghostly characters that appear behind the glass wall opposite passengers waiting for the trains.

Qwerty Keyboard: by Sarah Frost

St. Louis based artist Sarah Frost creates these large scale installations fabricated from of up-cycled keyboards resulting in subtle patterns and textures. I have to admit I was instantly drawn to the idea and composition but for some reason, Ross thinks it's gross. Of course, I'm intentionally not showing the close-up shots.

Shade: by Simon Heijden

"A responsive skin to the windows of a building that filters daylight into a moving projection of shadows that translates the ever-changing natural timeline of the outdoor to the static and perpetual indoor space.

Shade is the launch of a new, self-developed material that applies as a film to glass surfaces, which through blocking and passing daylight forms a spacial projection of shadows and sunlight. The film holds a grid of triangles that each individually fade between transparent and opaque, and hence block or pass light. The graphic shadows projected on the floor, walls and ceiling of the space reveal the geometrical wind patterns that pass the building on the other side of the glass, as choreographed by the measurements of an outdoor sensor. As the angle of light and patterns of wind are continuously changing throughout the day and year, the perpetual character of the artificial space is reconnected with an evolving, unplanned natural timeline. Shade is commissioned by the Art Institute Chicago."

Mimosa: Jason Bruges

Inspired by the Mimosa plant and it's innate adaptability, Bruges studio created this amazing installation using individual OLEDS to mimic the delicate nature of the mimosa's flower pedals and how they react to light. Just lovely that is.

Up Lamp: by Nakarin Kamseela

Built from the small cuts of wood from production waste, the Up lamp resinates with the mission at Deesawat. Produce smart, responsible, well designed products from scraps and trash. Rad.

Sebastian Errazuriz

" Sebastian Errazuriz, the Chilean-born designer and artist, became famous for his Bilbao shelf, in which a real tree branch was attached to a wall to create an organic display unit. In his latest design, the Metamorphosis shelf, Errazuriz really goes out on a limb. The inspiration for the limited-edition Baltic birch plywood shelf (which is hand-carved by the Italian company Horm) came from his grandmother’s ivy-covered garden. “The dark branches that crawled along the walls were so thick that I would use them as natural shelves for my garden toys,” Errazuriz said. Given the $75,000 price tag, however, your spade and trowel had better be by Fabergé."

These limited edition Moleskines were produced by the Helvetica Project especially for an exhibit at LaForet in Harajuku where a temporary “Helvetica Shop” was available for the patrons. While they have been sold out for some time now, I'm still hoping to score one of my own.

With the recent opening of our new neighborhood Alfalfas, I've spent quite a bit of time hanging out, being served up protein ladened smoothies by their juice bar's mixologist and most importantly, discovering a variety of new culinary delights. And among my many new findings, The Beecher's handmade crackers top the list. Just go out and get them. The Seattle based cheese makers have successfully complimented their award winning, hand crafted cheeses with just about the best cracker I've ever tasted. Give them a try asap, it's hopeless addiction I tell you.

Another first for me....posting on women's bags but if the design resonates, then I typically commit to sharing the idea. In collaboration with graphic designer Masayoshi Kodaira for Bilbao Prism Four, The Issey Miyake Bao Bao Bilbao Prism bag features four color-ways, all composed with responsibly selected materials. As a feature product of Miyake's new Tokyo based retail store, the handbag is comprised of repeating triangular pieces resulting in a stealth, architectural look.

I've been rather smitten as of late with Kaia Foods and their tasty line of sprouted Sunflower Seeds. To the point where I have more seriously considered a raw diet....for a while at least.
Kaia foods was founded on the belief that "our health is best supported and perpetuated by eating an abundance of minimally processed whole foods." All of Kaia's products are sprouted, mixed and dehydrated at very low temperatures, remaining raw without baking, frying or bleaching. In addition to the sprouted 4 varieties of Sunflower Seeds (I tested the Sweet Curry), Kaia Foods offers Organic Buckwheat Granola and Fruit Leathers. 24 Hours in Chicago: Vinyl Vinyl

I just wrapped an environmental graphic design + install job for a So Cal based mortgage Co. located in the River North area of Chicago. Graphically representative of the transition from urban to suburban, the bold simple applied window graphics celebrate quick marketing messages for Prospect Mortgage Chicago while peeking the interests of onlookers as they wait for their commuter train at the Chicago "L" stop on the blue line. Partially covering 25 windows along the West facade of 230 W. Superior, this installation represents the largest urban graphic assignment I've developed to date. Let's hope for more.

Motivated by solid ideas, I instantly gravitated to the Bottlehood booth at Boulder's Makerie Event, last weekend at Chautauqua. Beyond the obviously well crafted glassware goods they produce and sell, the kind folks at Bottlehood reclaim and up-cycle discarded bottles from local restaurants and bars, many of which were on their way to landfills. They do this by providing local establishment with proprietary collection bins where they then pick up the raw materials and repurpose the glass into great looking products. From my perspective, the mission behind Bottlehood represents a genuine "win win" scenario for both parties as the establishment can celebrate their participation in a responsible movement and Bottlehood enjoys the financial and environmentally responsible benefits of developing a wonderfully simple and useful product. A first, posting on bathroom fittings.... and a toilet for that matter. Although this concept is old news on the Asian front, I'm appreciative of its clever combination of beauty and innovation-the toilet-sink combination by Roca. Taking baby steps towards better water efficiency, the Roca utilizes "water-reuse technology" by capturing the sink's greywater, drastically reducing the fresh water wasted during the flushing process. Nice idea.

From overwhelming deadlines, my insatiable craving for content and information via Twitter, travel, out of town guests, family commitments--where to begin I ask. If I'm being honest, I've even toyed with the idea of bailing on Finndustry all together as it takes a great deal of my spare time and burdens me with the pressures of continual posting. Life's challenges have been catching up with me in many ways. Nevertheless, I'm still inspired on a daily basis by my family, my design career and all that is happening around me, especially when it comes in the form of creative ideas, innovative products, beautiful typography, memorable compositions of music and in particular important social movements and idea that enrich our lives, the communities in which we live and the World at large. For this I will continue on....let's see what happens next.

I quite appreciated the quick piece from today's NYTimes on the classic 60's Bernardo sandal line--said to be a staple for the Euro-Hippiedom and the likes of English born actress Jane Birkin among others. Originally introduced in 1967, the contemporary lines and structure of the shoe works quite well in 11, with the brand being realigned for this century. As for Birken, she's just plain groovy, emerging from the Swinging London scene of the 1960's, her must see film credits include Blow Up and Wonderwall.

Among a variety of features, I'm most intrigued with the light wall display, seemingly inspired by 70's space rock and the ambient sounds of artists such as Cluster, Eno and Rother. Creating a large 8-bit-like pattern, the display is paired with a inch LED, creating an every changing visual.

The Talented Emily Wettstein

Yet another in the long line of extremely talented Wettstein's, the 25 year-old Brooklynite Emily is certainly no exception. And by the looks of her recently submitted graduate school application project, the reclaimed timber dining table, she can clearly find her way around a proper wood shop. Raised on a horse farm in rural New Jersey, young Emily was exposed to (but perhaps at the time, bored out of her mind) the masterful skills of both her father and grandfather, while most likely dodging wood-chips and welding sparks. Was design and fabrication meant to emerge in her future--only time would tell? It wasn't until undergrad that she began extracting those subliminal observations and innate talents, transforming 2d design exercises into 3d ones through experiments in sculpture and furniture.

Composed of (02) irregularly shaped reclaimed walnut planks and supported by 1/4" sheets of rusted plate steel, the exposed center "slot" reveals a removable concealed planter adding an unexpected green component to her design. Fortunately, it was her magical combinations of materials and wit that earned our friend Emily some solid notoriety. Along with her much deserved acknowledgement, Emily's background has included an apprenticeship as a second assistant under award winning portrait photographer Martin Schoeller and a welding position with Amorphous Studio in Greenpoint Brooklyn.

While the tables are available for purchase and special order, Dennis the cat is not for sale.

Emily has recently taken on a position with Uhuru Design while continuing to work on a documentary film called archiCUTLURE, and a website connecting consumers with farmers called FoodStarter. Congrats Emily, can't wait to see what's next and look forward to having you hang with us in Boulder.

Rolling Hut: A New Cabin in the Woods

Highlighted on one of my new favorite sites, Wanken, brought to me by @rburdekin, I happily stumbled upon yet another of Olson Kundig Architects thoughtful living concepts, the Rolling Huts. Peacefully situated on a flood plain in Methow Valley, Washington, these low impact dwellings have been designed to "roll," serving as a modern alternative to camping. The "herd" of structures as it is commonly referred, has beautiful vistas of the North Cascades and is centrally located to the charming towns of Twisp, Winthrop and Mazama where summer markets, shops and restaurants are bountiful.

Equipped with a small refrigerator, fireplace and Wi-Fi, each structure has a sleeping platform isperfect for two, and the modular furniture in the living area can be reconfigured to sleep an additional two. Check the Rolling Huts well designed site for rates and year round availability. At a mere 125.00 per night, I know where I may be spending some time this year for a weekend getaway.

Fusing the traditional musical styles of their native city with mainstream rock and R&B influences, their sound renders a "jammy, bouncy, funky variety of swamp-rock," unlike much of what you may have heard. New Orlean's own, The Radiators have been satisfying a loyal fan base of "fish-heads" for 33 years and 4500 shows and while rarely heard of in the world of rock music, the band is still composed of the original five-man lineup formed in 1978. Of course, all good things do come to an end as the band announced on that the 2011 tour will be their last!

With a repertoire of over three hundred original tunes and at least a thousand covers (including many Dead and classic rock tunes) the band's approval has been justified by hundreds of live concert recordings made available on one of my favorite resources, Archive.org.

Included here is one of the many great shows from the 80's--an era when I spent many hours during my early Mid-Western years listening. Thanks for all the great years of touring and fine sounds.

Friend Tim Ryan, owner of Ault Park, a professional construction and property management firm recently asked us to design a thought provoking site sign panel, intended to "celebrate the high level of quality and craftsmanship" his project's reflect. The latest venture, 3080 8th Street, is a West facing (2) level Craftsman inspired home, in Boulder's coveted Newlands Neighborhood. Of course, I'm always appreciative of opportunities like this where overall design + fabrication were part of the complete scope. The sign panel layout included a rendered visualization of the "to be completed" home and other graphics including the pursuit of LEED Certification, all printed on Alumicor by our local printer, Photocraft. As for the framework, the redwood pieces were hand cut and connected using traditional lap joints. With a much needed free weekend towards the end of this past summer, good friend and Boulder artist, Ruth Hiller welcomed us to her Winter Park Spread + Studio for a truly immersive modernist living experience. Set high above an evergreen forest with a flowing brook below, the structure composed of two continuous glue-lam structural beams houses primary living spaces, all planned to have the best views over the landscape. Arizona architect, Michael P. Johnson Studios chose a single tile color throughout resulting in a light filled minimalist spaces which flows freely while showcasing Ruth's works of past and present. A big thanks goes out to Hiller for sharing her space with the Friday family--we had a great time.

I wanted to take the time to thank and congratulate my good friend José Yavari and the rest of the crew involved with again pulling together an amazing 4-day event last week at Boulder's homegrown Adventure Film Festival. Having attended for the past few years, I continue to be impressed not only with the exceptionally high caliber of filmmaking but also the varied and engaging topics presented. Whether we were following the headwaters of the Colorado River, catching the wave breaks on the coastlines of Rio de Janeiro or racing the steep grades of the High Sierras on longboards, the thrills kept us at the edge of our seats all weekend--a great time for all.

Conceived, composed, illustrated and written, The Voyages of the Marmara Park Galaxy is the graphic novel Shawn "The English" English, Ross B. and I developed together during our 2 week stay in Istanbul. With a major time constraint in place our team acted quickly to create the story with the goals of both standing out amongst the fierce competition within the Eastern European retail market as well as to tell a compelling, memorable story about the Space age themed Marmara Park retail project. With a launch planned for November's MAPIC, Europe's most prestigious conference for International retail real estate, we knew a static poster and brochure wouldn't quite do the trick. Stay tuned!

As part of our elaborate marketing effort to celebrate a new retail concept located in the Beylikdüzü region of Istanbul, Turkey, Burdekin and I collaborated on the design of a "teaser"print piece, inspired by space-age transit travel tickets. With glossy white minimalism in mind, the outer sleeve was adorned with die cut "alien glyphs," while the interior data card intentionally emphasizes the unfamiliar and unknown. As for the purpose and destination of the journey......stay tuned as at this point of our pending Turkish roller coaster ride, things were still TBD.
